Description of foci
The conference participants will explore European Cinema, looking at those films and directors, movements and aesthetics that might be considered “Art House,” and consider whether these work with or against European “mainstream” cinema.
Participants are both practioners and scholars. There will be panels as well as round table discussions that will address such topics as European cinemas and its engagement with border crossings between European and other cinemas; representations of migrant identities; representations of intersections of (trans)gender, sexuality and race in European cinemas; New cinemas in Europe and European filmmaking praxis, production, and funding vehicles.
Travel to Binghamton University
By car: please see map. Parking is $5 a day, free on the weekend.
By air: you can either fly directly to Binghamton or to an airport nearby (f. example, JFK or Newark). If you fly to JFK or Newark, you will have to take ground transportation from the airport to Port Authority in Manhattan and from there take a Greyhound or Shortline Bus to Binghamton. Please see link to these lines. The bus from Port Authority to Binghamton takes up to 4 hours and a round trip ticket costs about $78.00. Once in Binghamton (airport or bus station), we will pick you up or you can take a taxi to the campus or to the hotel.
Housing
We have reserved a block of single occupancy rooms in a comfortable dormitory on campus (Mountain View). All conference proceedings will take place in this building. The charge for the room is $44.00 per night.
You could also stay at the Marriott Courtyard near campus (15 minutes walking). Please see link for booking your room. If you book by June 9, you will be eligible for the conference rate of $154 a night, plus tax, for a suite (one king size bed, one pull-out couch (separated by French doors), fridge, microwave, two TVs. Quantities are limited.
If you want to make your own arrangements (for instance via Kayak), keep in mind that the street address of Binghamton University is 4400 Vestal Pkwy E, Vestal, NY; it is not located within Binghamton city limits.
As Owen Evans has kindly pointed out, coming from Europe, you will need to disclose where you’ll be staying for purposes of your visa.

Registration
Participants from off campus, please pay your registration fee of $70.00 by July 1, 2009 using this web form (opens new window).
If you register at the conference site, the registration fee is $85.00.
Please note that all breakfast tables, coffee breaks, luncheons and dinners are included in your registration fee.
